Climate change is already affecting the water sector from its source material to its customer base and its recycling routes. The sector is both impacted by and contributes to climate change. Water is one of the most important enablers of economic and social development and public health, and as such needs to be resilient to climate change and shifting weather patterns.

EUREAU welcomes the publication of the White Paper on climate change adaptation and the accompanying Commission Staff Working Document on Climate Change and Water, Coasts and Marine Issues. We appreciate that the White Paper recognises the need for adaptation and highlights the critical nature of water for adaptation in the various sectors, namely health, agriculture and forestry, biodiversity, coastal zones and infrastructure. EUREAU is concerned about the potential climate change impact on water services. We would wish for improved coordination of European policy, better communication with stakeholders and more research on adaptation opportunities.
