Water re-use and alternative resources at home may contribute to a sustainable water management. In specific situations it offers monetary and environmental benefits. However, it also involves risks, especially health risks. Therefore, suitable controls are necessary to mitigate these risks. Water re-use and alternative resources should always be evaluated on a site specific basis.
This Eureau position deals with water re-use and alternative resources at home. Re-use for field irrigation and industrial re-use are dealt with in other Eureau positions.
On 21 August 2011, the first day of the World Water Week in Stockholm, EUREAU, the European Federation of National Associations of Water and Wastewater Services, together with the Swedish Water & Waste Water l Association, SIWI and UNESCO-International Hydrological Programme, have organised for the second time the Malin Falkenmark Seminar on “Towards resource-effective water and nutrient reuse in the urban environment’.
European Water suppliers welcome the efforts the Commission and countries are making to highlight and address the challenges of water scarcity and drought. EUREAU is confident that its members have already taken action and are implementing initiatives to address the issue of water scarcity to develop concrete long term solutions.
