Seminar: Resourceful Water - 06 September 2011

Seminar at the European Parliament in Brussels, September 6th
from 11.00 am until about 5 p.m
In order to cope with the increasing scarcity of raw materials and energy sources Europe has been making the correct choices with regards to resource efficiency and innovation. The water sector not only supports these choices, but is also able to contribute substantially. The use of hydropower is well known, however the possibilities to create energy from water are much more extensive. Heat or coldness from water can also produce energy. Likewise, the chemicals in
wastewater can be used as fuel or to provide other valuable matters such as phosphate and nitrogen. The possibilities of water as a resource are multiple and fit closely with the European Union’s policies on innovation and resource efficiency.
During this seminar we will present the potential energy sources as well as the current developments in the field, and mirror these to further progress within the EU . Contributions from several EU countries including organizations are
foreseen and a detailed program will be available soon.
The seminar will be hosted by Judith Merkies ME P and will be held at the European Parliament in Brussels. The initiative is supported by Eureau and organised by the Dutch Union of Water Authorities, the Dutch association for
drinking water companies (Vewin) and Waternet, Amsterdam.
